Ergonomic Testing Using SetPose Posing Software

March 18, 2026 (Updated: May 6, 2026) by August van de Ven

Evaluating and communicating ergonomic risk is notoriously difficult. While cutting costs in ergonomics can seem tempting, the long term costs may exceed those made in preemptive testing. This is one of the main reasons why software made to evaluate ergonomics can be quite expensive. Besides that, most ergonomics software require lots of training, taking weeks to learn and rely on heavy CAD integration. This may lead some to create ergonomic reports manually using pen and paper which lacks accuracy and professionalism.

SetPose: Quickly and Easily Test Ergonomics

SetPose is the perfect middle ground for those looking to test ergonomics quickly and easily. The interface is intuitive and requires no CAD experience or technical proficiency. As SetPose runs in your browser, there is also no download required so you can get started immediately!

Starting to Use SetPose for Ergonomics

To try out the interface for free, you can go to setpose.com and get started manipulating the model. There you'll find the basic model, a simple model that's available to anyone. You can start by moving around the model and getting used to adjusting the model's arms and legs. By default, the "Bend" control will be selected on the left side of your screen. This control lets you adjust the flexion and extension of the model's joints. In order to manipulate the joints in the other axes, you select one of the other control buttons. With regards to the shoulder joint, the second control button will control the abduction and adduction while the third control button lets you adjust the internal and external rotation of the shoulder.

Use SetPose to its Full Potential with Pro+

Once you've got the hang of the controls, you can start to use SetPose to its full potential by upgrading to SetPose Pro+. Pro+ provides you with all the extra features that you would need for ergonomic testing. Arguably the most important being the import feature that you use by simply dragging your models into the editor. Your model will automatically be scaled to fit inside the editor but you can also scale it to your liking using the resize tool.

Specify the Model's Measurements

Once imported, the ergonomic testing can proceed. Add a human model to the scene and in the model settings, set the model's height. You can either specify your own measurements or pick one of the presets ranging from fifth percentile female, to ninety-fifth percentile male to test all possible scenarios.

Add Custom Constraints

By default, SetPose's own, biological constraints are selected. These reflect the natural limits of movement for the average person. If you are looking to set custom limits, to reflect your test case or simulate limited mobility, you can add a set of custom constraints in the model settings. Simply click the plus button next to the constraints selector and specify your limits in the dialog. Once applied, you will no longer be able to move the joints beyond the specified limits.

Create Movements

As movement is an important aspect of ergonomics, being able to visualize movement is crucial. Using SetPose Pro+, creating movements is made easy by the animate feature! Start using it by clicking the animate button. In the animate dialog you simply create a moving model by adding two poses to the timeline. Pressing play will then transform the model, moving between the two poses. You can add as many poses as you need to create more complex movements for your testing.
